ExO World Summit was an amazing event. We had over 1500 people that attended  excited to find ways to transform the world for a better future. Active attendees put together a document of their notes and learnings and below is a copy of this. We wanted to share this with you so that you get a picture of what is possible when amazing people get together online! Introduction to the Summit

 

Day 1

We are living in a world where one of the most important things are mindsets, and what we get into our mind is changing our mindsets. As we are living in this time of turbulence, we must remember that the amygdala scan everything we see in negative terms, in order to survive; we pay 10 times more attention to the negative things. Thus, we pay 10 times more attention to negative news than to positive news, so there is a disproportion of negative news, but we are living in a world with massive solutions,that can give us both hope and a vision of a compelling future. So far, all human history we live in a world of scarcity, and we lived were the pie had to be sliced in thinner slices, but that is no longer the case. In the book abundance, this is very clear, right now the future is better than we think, because the exponential technologies are allowing us to make more abundance, so rather than cutting the slice thinner and thinner, we are building more pies.  

We are creating more abundance of water (we can extract water from the atmosphere), we are creating more solar energy. There is nothing truly scarce, and when we live in a mindset of abundance, we can think of how we can all win, rather on how I can win, and you don’t. We have the access to technology, the capital to start solving problems.

For Salim Ismail this is the best moment to be alive, but very few will argue that the world is better in so many levels, because we romanticize the past. But right now for the first time ever we have a vacation for survival, even though it is true that we do have a wider rich- poor gap, the middle class is expanding; we are living in a world of haves and super haves.

  • In times of mounting pressure, fear becomes the dominant emotion. Resist the temptation to shrink the time horizon.

  • Deflationary abundance from technological development, e.g. cell phones, is staggering. 
  • Given this increasing deflation, govts are creating a structural problem...if you’re destroying the value of cash, it's a mistake for a CEO to sit on cash so do dividends - the rich are getting richer because of govt printing cash
  • By deflating currencies, you have to spend a lot more to buy the same item ⇒  asset prices are artificially propped up (but net-net the value of everything is dropping)
  • Debt is created that can never be repaid
  • If you print money, that money has to “find a home”, e.g. real estate, so RE prices go up and its users (tenants) get killed because they can’t pay their rent

    • Another path is to “let it fail” but that will cause a global depression (like 1930s) & can cause the banking system to collapse. Can policymakers stomach this? 
  • Loss of trust in one’s currency might lead to possible pegging of some currencies to bitcoin or other similar crypto currencies

  • This is a healthcare crisis that has triggered an economic crisis (very diff than 2008 which was a financial crisis)
    • So we have to focus on the health issues first...if done well, won't be as big a problem reopening the economy
    • On flip side, if there isn’t adequate testing & confidence building measures, folks won’t come back out of their homes
  • Going forward, we need to rethink how trade happens globally
    • Alternatives to very consolidated global supply chains
    • Rethink just-in-time supply chains (especially for health items & pandemics)
    • Use Defence Production Act to start producing in the US quickly 
  • Three major changes we must think about
    • Income inequality (both within society & across countries)
    • Tech needs to be available for everybody (today not accessible to the poor...eg. low income h)
    • Couple million of US households don't have bank accounts (bcoz fees are too high) so are at the mercy of paycheck cashing

  • When people think about reading-writing the code of life, they think of DNA / genetic manipulation.
  • Significant drops in the cost of genome sequencing, faster than Moore's Law. Made CRISPR possible, the ability to  use Cas9 to to search, find, and correct base pair misspellings in the genetic code that give rise to disease. Another version of the CRISPR enzyme, Cas 12, may provide sufficient search functions for things like viral RNA, so we can develop point of care tests for Covid-19!
